A diode is a semiconductor device with two terminals, typically allowing the flow of current in one direction only.
Diodes allow current to flow only in the forward direction. Semiconductor diodes are formed by a PN junction. The most common type of semiconductor diode is the silicon diode. Semiconductor PN junction diodes can be formed from materials other than silicon, such as germanium, selenium, and a host of semiconductor materials used in light emitting diodes (LEDs). Please note the electrical characteristics of LEDs are the same as normal diodes.

Now a technical question. Which one is correct? "typically allowing the flow of current in one direction only." Or "Diodes allow current to flow only in the forward direction." Obviously both statements can not be correct. Please explain in technical terminology. Thanks

Lol...if something flows in one direction such as forwards then, in my opinion, both statements are correct. The first statement defines a diode and the subsequent statement briefly describes their functionality.
