Quite a bit of heat being handled by the first pass transistor ( 10 watts )

Shoot, you are right. Thanks. I need plenty of Transistors in series with a resistor after each of them, also need a heat sink. Thanks!

You can dispense with the first two stages as the current limiter dose all that's needed no need to regulate the voltage. Still the same heat dissipation though just less parts.

The limiter needs rejigging a bit. Put leds on the collector of top transistor change 1k to 12k and 80ohm resistor to 33 ohm then tie it to the output of your bridge rectifier.

Also bare in mind that if the 230v supply is to represent ac mains then you need to set it to 340v as the voltage output of the supply on the simulator is ac peak and not rms as is the case with the mains..

Oops ... the vreg not needed but seeing the dedign is edutaining. can either of you imagine a way to get a couple dozen ma without the huge v drop? I've been pondering this a few weeks.

Unless a smp design or similar is used the only other way is to us capacitor coupling ie the capacitor becomes the pass transistor 1uf will give you a stable supply of 70ma and simply scale the capacitor up or down to give more or less current ie 10uf will give 700ma and so on. Assuming a 50hz supply. I once built a battery charger with a 33uf cap which charges at just over 2amps very successfully with the only heat being from the diodes. Or if you can get a hold of or are capable of designing a thing called a regulated transformer which uses a capacitor added into the windings which will give you any voltage you design with high efficiency and a reasonable amount of voltage regulation.
