Rectification can be done right at a transformer. This produces a smoother ripple than a bridge rectifier, though more costly.

Don't get me wrong but u miss from center taped transformer a one crucial phenomenon. A electrmagnetic coupling between windings is not present. That means if one winding part conduct second part MUST be in oposite polarition if we want call this center-tap transformer not a inductive divider formed from two separte ones. This coupling prevent any smoothing action u observe here. Ths is required to not saturte core and creating short circuit efectively reducing inductance to zero level. Actually if u use not airgapped transformer this DC part u see at ur circuit wil also saturate core very easily make them left only active ohmic resistance of winding to prevent hard short circuit. But if tranformers are a little bigger a efetive winding res is around 10-7 ohm so a nice short will occurs almost instantly when u put plug into wall socket make u experience nice small blast whose destroy ur plug pins and u will need go to basement reset ur fuses whose thanks god protect any xperimenter from wire melting, heavy arcing and inherent fire. There's many other phnomenons that asist coupled inductances whose are not present when they are not coupled such as expotential inductance relation when two 1 henry coils bound in series aiding give one coil with inductance equal to 4 not 2 like when u bound them as they are on separate cores. And when bound them in series oposite and both have same numbr of turns they give one coil with zero inductance so attention need to be paid when windings are bound togther
