Carbon Rod Soldering Iron

This carbon rod soldering iron runs on 6 volt battery. The "C" with the open SPST switch is a wood handle with positive wire of battery in one end (positive shown above in simulator) and the brass tube to insert the carbon rod into bottom of wood handle is not shown. Positive terminal connects to sliding ring with set screw to make contact with carbon rod. Closer to tip for hotter temperature settings (3,000 degrees F.) and slide towards wood handle for cooler settings. May be able to weld some things on hottest settings. Work being soldered is connected to Battery ground. Article indicates connections may be reversed. Graphite has very poor heat transfer characteristics. This is not a good idea or a safe one. You could probably solder about as well with a candle. The only remotely similar process used in metalwork uses a special copper clad carbon electrode and compressed air to gouge steel. It's extremely rare to see it because it is extremely noisy and energy intensive.

Twin carbon arc torches do welding. I have never heard of graphite pencil leads use other than homemade resistors. Arc rods are in some sun lamps so I think you have a different material in mind. This article showed a small handle and small carbon rod set up.

A second article of jewelry repair says Carbon Welder can be used. First, drill into carbon rod about 3/4 inch deep the diameter of Number 2 or Number 3 Pencil Lead with 1.25 inches of pointed pencil lead sticking out of the carbon rod. Extremely hard pencil lead has a tendency to shatter when heated quickly. So, pencil lead can be used.
