Yes a jule grandpa. I always think what is so popular in this circuit cuz It's require to use a proper transformer and such is most unliked element from all. More u need to wound this transformer by hand cuz any one found in smps perform poorly cuz it's not designed to operate with single transistor without any other elements. If u go to shop nd ask about trafo for jule thief they call 911 and place order for one handy pychiatrist . Qbout hqnd wiring Not all ferite cores will allow u operation at all so it also give high fail ratio in performing such. I'm not a person wih inductance'o'phobia but even I when think that i must deal with dissasembly some delicate ferrite transformer to create buzzer for buzzing some .......led...... i say no betrer is to find some cmos ic and build astable from not's or fast assemble of some LC generator cuz ordinary small coils are found everywhere today and do not require any rewounding cuz always u find proper one in old broken energy saver bulb or any kind of power supplies from any device. Inductance value is coded on coil in many cases, they are small like ordinary 1/4 watt resistor even use bar color code to write inductance. If u meet a resistor whose is painted on green this is actually a inductor. Range from few micro up to fife henries all in shapes whose meet resitor diameters and shapes so one henry coil is a one watt classic resistor shape and size equivalent with only green paint make them differ. And evn if u need to wound or unwound some turns many coils have only some tape cover and unwounding it is not a deal requiring only to catch the wire, pull the wire , cut the wire and sometimes solder if we are not lazy enough . So that i was decide to not use any transformer unless there is good reason to do so.

Hehe but u will rather not hook this transitorised nail to pulse worth over hundred euro one watt beam output power laser diode?? And u must pulse it by concrete amount of jules in one pulse not exceeding it more than 1/5 means that u are sre that nail hasnperfectlystable duty cycle (if not instant conversion from laser to worthles led lol) or being sure that frequency of this nail not change to little higher exceeding ammountof jules delivered (and instant conversion to led again) and rather hard is to model nail behavior and surely calculte what diameter will b need and bunch of other parameters to stabilise those said factors. A jule hief has zero other components to regulate itself or stabilise so u need to be an expert from all kindof exotic transformers transformers. Jule thief is kinda adventure never knows what goes out when made one and curious is fact that wlot no one knows how it works. And simulation nsoft here shows different mechwnism than real operation. ONly when introduce air cored transformer it will try to actas those seen here.
