Radio Power Supply 12 Volt Battery Charger

On left is 13.8 volt 15 amp power supply being used to charge the 9.5 volt lead acid battery below. Since this a MANUAL approach the charged battery has to be watched for over heating and to hold charging amperage around 5 amps or lower as voltage comes up on discharged battery. Probably not the method of choice but a possible method to use on battery backup charging. If someone has used this method before I welcome suggestions.

@Imccoig, what voltage is needed for fast-charging a 12V lead acid battery? I used to charge mine with a 15V 10A SMPS adapter, which I had salvaged from an induction heater. The battery used to get really hot and so I stopped charging them.

13.8 volt is recommended and have control of amperage while keeping watch on heating of battery.

How can I control the amperage of the smps? Using a resistor wastes a lot of power.

@Imccoig, the problem with battery charging circuits as you have displayed is, once the battery is upto the desired Float Voltage, it must be removed from the charger. If it is not removed, it will eventually reach the voltage of the charger, and boil off its electrolyte. @fatcat2, a fully charged 12V lead battery has a settled float voltage of 13.2V. For constant voltage chargers, 13.6V is recommended for gel type batteries, 13.8V for other wet cell batteries. Smart chargers boost charge at 14.2V then drop to the level required for constant charging. 2. It is normal to control the voltage level of a smps, that eliminates the use of a shunt measure resistor.

@BillyT, I charged my battery at 13.6V as you had instructed. The battery still got hot but it's okay, I guess. However, it took nearly 4.5 hours for the charging to complete.
