This is from an idea that dates back 50 years or more. However the principles  of operation are used today in many robots. The arrangement  of the circuit  is entirely symmetrical and indeed could be independent electrically if required!

The [Normally Open] push switches represent anykind of input that can discharge the timing capacitors e.g. opto-sensor or T.T.L. etc. input that can be acted to short out either timing capacitor.
