Here is a simple, idiot light for 3.6 or 3.7 lithium battery. The circuit is from Talking Electronics. 

When the battery voltage is 3.6 or above, the green LED light illuminates, under that the yellow light comes on to indicate low voltage. I showed the almost step by step mounting of the components. The simple device only has 7 components. It can probably be adapted by changing the values of the resistors to monitor the charge of other types of batteries. Do this at your own risk. This is just a crude light indicator and does not indicate the complete state of charge of the battery.
