How to control something that draws a lot of current by using a different power source and a common ground

I'm no expert but i don't think you're supposed to use an NPN transistor to switch a positive voltage. You should also use a pulldown or pullup resistor to the base of the transistor.

@Sgd0072, right a PNP is the better choice here as common emitter and not a voltage follower NPN or common collector. Check this http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5190130301403136

Thank you guys, it's been updated, using a pnp transistor was the correct way
