Negative resistance Oscillator

Historically negative resistance oscillators were very alluring in the making of heterodyne receivers, because they had a considerably wide tuning range, worked stable across the tuning range without any corrections in the circuitry and offered great frequency stability (at the time). This made them a preferable choice for use as local oscillators in het receivers. Originally tetrode tubes were used for the anode current kink (or sometimes the second grid current kink) in their characteristics, which essentially made a small portion of their characteristics act in a negative resistance way. Nowadays you have special gunn diodes and whatnot, but back to basics, you can make a very simple NR Oscillator with just two transistors and a few components around them.

Can not see the -ve resistance, why and where and how can it be monitored,, do you know?! plz.

@kiani, what you say is, the first time we showed this circuit to you, you just ignored it. Its not the first time you see it. Not to much respect you show. Whats so diffucult to understand and as consequence just ignore it? This is behaviour which makes me sick.

Another quiery. Don't all oscillators make use of negative resistance and exhibit negative resistance? ' other wise the circuit woud not oscillate,, the push to the swing has to come from some where,, so it comes from the stored energy in L ( and C).

No, relaxation oscillators or phase shifting oscillators do not have negative resistance. You can see any amplifier as negative resistive, but keep the principal exact and do not mix it.

Kiani hurz is right here. Any Amplifier can be viewed as negative resistance devices, because as resistance consumes and dissipates power an amplifier is used to generate power into some load, but as hurz mentioned the principles behind some oscillators does not exactly cover negative resistance. For instance wien Bridge oscillators use an RC chain to create a bandpass filter, and the gain of the op amp replenishes the losses. The amp itself is nothing but a repeater of the input signal with some voltage gain to compensate the losses in the tank circuit. Similar notion can be applied to phase shift Oscillators, where the voltage amplifier is also a phase inverter. The output is 180dgs out of sync with the input so another 180dgs need to be added to encompass a POSITIVE feedback. The voltage gain of the amplifier compensates the losses in the phase shift chain. Most LC oscillators are also simple common emitter amps with a positive feedback. In by themselves the active devices don't exhibit the negative resistance property, only when a positive feedback is applied do they begin restoring the losses in the tank circuit. Relaxation oscillators work by yet another principle - hysteresis and integration.

Think i understand,, ie.. In for example an amplifier or phase shift osc. We (can?!) observe negative resistance effect, while that is not their driver snd is a (passenger). Where as in your ( abive) osc. The observed -ve resistance is the driver and the (passenger). Am i near?!

Uhm, no, the oscillators I've described in my last comment don't have a negative resistance kink anywhere in their characteristics, a whole lot of different effects make them oscillate - positive feedback, phase shift, bandpass filtering, hysteresis, integration and such. As for this little gizmo here, even without the tank circuit, it still has a NR kink.
