Save this article to use as a handy cut and paste, to place maths symbols into your EC article details.
Cut and paste any part in to your EC details:
+ × ÷ = % - ? ! _ ( ) / ^ * 4x=12 4*x = 12 4(x)=12 (4) x (x)=12 4xx=12...ugh
° eg 21°C temp or angle of 90°
∠ angle
≈ approximately equal to
≡ equivalent to
> greater than
< less than
≥ greater than or equal to
≤ less than or equal to
≠ 'does not equal' same as using <>
± eg temp = 32°C ± 5%
√b square root of b nicer than sqrt (b)
√ square root eg....... 4 × √a where a = 9 gives 12 or 4 (√9) ie 4 (√a)
∝ directly proportional to care not to use the infinity symbol
π Π pi
△ delta 'change in' uppercase Greek letter D
≪ a lot less than
》 a lot greater than the look of symbols may differ somewhat
∞ infinity
x! eg where x = 4 x! =24 (ie 4x3x2x1) called 'x factorial'
∫ similar to ∑ 'Sum of' usually used in calculus for integral ... elongated latin S as in Sum
∑ sum of Greek uppercase S eg if β= ₐ₌₁∑⁴ (a + μ) where μ=3 then β=22
x→∞ where x tends to infinity
x→⁰ where x tends to 0
%
∴ therefore
∵ because or since eg V=12 volts ∵ I=2 amps and R=6Ω when V=IR
Some Greek Letters......
use as you like......
but some are commonly used for well known things like λ for wavelength, so just be careful to avoid ambiguity
eg if λ= φ+4 then λ=6 when φ=2 fine, but don't choose the λ symbol there if discussing wavelengths.
φ
μ
σ sigma be careful not to confuse it with the delta symbol
λ
α
β
γ
Δ delta often used in phase statements with γ for star
δ delta Greek lower case d eg δy/δx
ε epsilon .. in electronics..don't confuse with e : e ≈ 2.71828183 eg: ε : V(t)=ε(1-e⁻⁽¹/τ⁾)
τ tau time constant.. symbol used for τ=RC eg calculation above for capacitor charging
θ
Φ
ω
Ω only use this for resistance when talking electronics ...... use it freely as you wish if not.
y(n) y x n or less ambiguous: y ⋇ n if y=2 and n=3 then y(n) = 6 ..... nicest
a(b^2) a ⋇ (b squared) a times ( b to the power of 2 ) better to use ab²
x̄ the mathematical mean value of a sample
X^½ 'to the power of 1/2' means 'take the square root' eg 16^½ = 4 same as √16 √ (x)
X² x³ etc eg 2^3 =8 or 2^³ = 8 or 2³ = 8 the last version looks the neatest
X⁻¹ eg 4⁻¹ means 1/4 3 × 10⁻¹ = 0.3 ie 3 x (1/10) a neat way of writing a reciprocal
X ⁻ ¹ ² ³ ⁴ ⁵ ⁶ ⁷ ⁸ ⁹ ⁰ ⁺ ⁿ select parts as reqd. eg if y=4 and n=3 then yⁿ = 64 ie 4³
Y ₀ ₁ ₂ ₃ ₄ ₅ ₆ ₇ ₈ ₉ ₓ ₑ not all letters are easily obtainable for this list unfortunately,
(Let me know if you can show a subscript which is not here and I will include it)... see more below.
logₑ(x) ≡ ln(x) log ₑ (x) select parts as reqd. e ≈ 2.71828183
⋇ use asterisk instead of x as meaning multiply, to avoid confusion since x is a much used symbol
eg let λ=3 and x=4 then choose carefully how to describe it: λ x x = 12 ?? or λ*x =12 or λ(x)=12

Quick notes:
Save and keep this article handy, then use it to to cut and paste any of these maths symbols in to your articles whenever you need them. I'll add extras at the bottom of the page when they are requested.
eg...without this cut/paste, something may read like this on EC:
A: tau=(1/(2 x pie x f)) where frequency f is at the cutoff for C
B: "log(base e)(x) is not the same as log(base 10)(x)"
C: angle of 45deg
D: x= (1/(sqrt (3b^2)))
Now using these symbols above, they may look like this in your EC details:
A: τ=(2πf꜀)⁻¹ where f꜀ is at the cutoff for C
B: logₑ(x) ≠ log₁₀(x) or use ln(x) for logₑ(x)
C: ∠ 45°
D: x= (√(3b²))⁻¹
Use brackets/parentheses as much as possible in order to avoid ambiguity.
( ) { } [ ]
(2 + 5) ⋇ 3 is different than 2 + (5⋇3) both are clear here, but writing 2+5⋇3 is asking for trouble
SUBSCRIPT ₑ ᵣ ₜ ᵤ ᵢ ₒ ₚ ₐ ₛ ₕ ⱼ ₖ ₗ ₓ ᵥ ₙ ₘ ꜀ ₍ ₎ ₋ ₊ ₌ ₀ ₁ ₂ ₃ ₄ ₅ ₆ ₇ ₈ ₉

Superscripts as upper case: ᴬᴮᴰᴱᴳᴴᴵᴶᴷᴸᴹᴺᴼᴾᴿᵀᵁᵂ
℀ eg y= ℀ where c= time sec and a = △temp °C ... don't use c for time if talking capacitance etc.
Latest new extras: I'll include them here if I can .... keep them rolling in, this page is for all of us.
