Motor reverse. Forward/backward with ability to change speed  on motor. For arduino. The switchs with power sources above is imitate the pins 9 and 10 on arduino. But whatever.
To change  speed in the example simply change voltage on power source above the switches. Which arduino can divided to 255.
The lamp in this example is imitate a motor.

Why not just an H bridge? This works too but requires more parts

This is an H-bridge. There's a handy chip that uses a circuit almost identical to this called the L298.
