Good question Billy, yes the amount of components could be reduced if the circuit was slightly modified.

@BillyT, what is "novel" for you at this "idea" from Lenny, or do you mean novel would be to reduce the amount of components? I think the number of components is already to low. Leds with equal color do need separate resistors for current limiting. This should be a well known effect to any engineer.
