Solenoid control using FQP30N06L MOSFET

This is a 12V, 2A solenoid coil, so using a FQP30N06L N-Channel MOSFET to control it from an Arduino. The 5V source and switch represent an output pin. The 1K is to keep the gate grounded when not in use. The fly-back diode is a 1N5822 Schottky. In my application this coil is part of a JF-0826B solenoid that pulls a pin to unlock a mechanism. It's pretty cool that you can see the inductor reverse current effect simulated when the switch is released (through the fly-back diode).

EC's parameters for MOSFETs are a bit general, if you can get the parameters for the devices being used and feed them in, the results will be a bit better. See 2ctiby's post http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5214638451195904

Thank you BillyT. Much appreciated. I worked out my own N-CH MOSFET settings on an H-Bridge circuit and was asking there for this exact feedback. Funny I forgot to change this settings in this one to what I got there (see http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5267607976673280). I got those settings by trial and error comparing to the FQP30N06L datasheet. The link you sent looks even better. I'm amazed that EC's standard settings are SO FAR OFF a common MOSFET (width of 1um versus 10mm? Wow!). I don't like this method as datasheets don't tell us the silicon chip size. I'll give some feedback to EC. Thank you again! (and I updated this and yes that makes it work much better).

Dear 2ctiby - you are a master. Thank you so much for the advice. I'm going to go build this along with the rest of the project. Thank you!!

And thanks to you too...it is so nice when we can help each other and all enjoy this site with fun and learning even if we make loads of mistakes...My electronics knowledge is very weak, and many of my mistakes have been noticed, but I am learning from everyone here and would encourage everyone to put their ideas on show without worrying about errors....we can help each other through them.

I see that you have had a nice play around with the Nmos settings and set the Rds by using a combination of Length and Transconductance there.....That works just fine as seen by your gate activity. My personal preference is to turn the KP fully clockwise to get the max fast current flow and then set the Rds entirely by the Length......you might want to play with that for further practice. The Width can also be altered to produce a similar outcome, and in some complex setups you will find youself manipulating all three to get a desired result...I love messing with these mosfets, just as others here have their pet aspects....we are very fortunate to have such a good site.
