Have you tried Wikipedia? Look up digital counter and 555 timer. You can likely get more data there than you might from here. The info you find will probably be more complete than ppl here may wish to contribute. Those are devices that will need a lot of explaining and some background in electronics on your part. Cheers.

The 555 timer is generally used to produce square waves with a given duty cycle. The counter counts up or down in binary. I suggest looking at user made circuits for their functionality.

The left is binary counter-it counts in binary code. The right is a 555 timer-it converts from DC source to square waves impulses.
