Basic LED sim with NPN's and a NOT using a 5V source. Click switch to change mode The gate switch will can be swapped for RPI GPIO pin. To prevent unnecessary switching of an N-Channel FET in place of the NPN just use a 10-100k ohm pulldown on the gate.

The default setting in this app for LEDs is 2 volts and 20 milliamps. So the current limiting resistor would be 3.3v-2v=1.3v/20ma=65ohms. Of course in real life each LED varies by application color etc

Thanks for the suggestion @wyoelk, will fix now, adding an op amp comparator to translate the 3.3v signal from a gpio pin to 5v. I have some motorolla MC33174s that will handle this no problem!
