Hi, I understand the current is originating at the inverted NAND gates, but does the NAND gates function as ground for current as well?

@CarlosHerrera81 Well ideally it can output a 0V (referenced to ground), so to answer your question, the NAND's output is connected to ground if it should transmit a 0V. In practical circuits this might actually not be exactly 0V due to stray voltages in the transistor circuitry (which would probably output a 'low' in the range of 0V to 0.8V).
