The zener diode is of no use here.

A proper examination shows that the zener is of importance here.

I'm not positive as I know less than little about zeners, but their primary purpose is to create a constant and stabilized voltage downstream of a resistor. And with the lamp settings, I think the zener should be at 6v instead of 10v. This reduces the amps to all the other components, thus reducing heat and extending life. Hope I'm correct, if not sorry, I'll research harder.

Oh if remove it requires more amps through all components, especially the bjt.

5.6V is a standard value. 6.8V will also work. But the zener wastes a lot of power.

You're welcome. The first time I was introduced to zeners was when I was making a ZVS driver. But I hate them, cuz they waste a lot of power and their max. power capability is only a few watts.
