Assume LED max current 20mA and voltage of 2 V. Look at voltage at different parts of circuit.  Change voltage source to 9 V.

No need to make assumptions on those default values, as they can be augmented to whatever you like. The trick here is to figure out a good value for that resistor, to allow optimum current through the LED..
