Copied thomaslss circuit to demonstrate. Top counter resets on 10, displays hex A for undesirable split second. Below counter will stop count and reset on clock after 9. Less gates from before I'm happy :)

Thomas and yeah this will work with 0-8, or anything-anything for that matter ;)

@roops1967, I like this work arround solution. It use less gates and no delay when compared to my buffer approach.

Unfortunately there are 2 gates left in my 12 hour demo. I cannot use this solution.
