Mains to 12V DC Adaptor

DANGEROUS - DO NOT BUILD UNLESS YOU ARE EXPERIENCED WITH MAINS POWERED CIRCUITS. This is a low current 12V output DC supply. 2.2uF capacitor must be at least 400 VAC rating. 470k = 1W 100R = 2W 470uF = 2W Diodes = 1N4007 or similar

What's the zener part number? I don't see it listed
Robert_Kidd
6 years ago
A 1N5349 would do. It is a 5W but a 2W zener would be adequate.
giomix

@crake could be 1N4742 zener

Thanks for pointing out the omission @crake. I had intended to detail it and forgot.

1N4742 is only 1W.

And Correction: 470uF is 25V working voltage (not 2W).

Your idiotic “Taser gun with 555” is extremely hazardous producing voltages of 1.36Gv. You have an unenviable history of propagating extremely unsafe “fire” circuits my ignorant friend and yet you have the audacity to post stupidity on this circuit?

All of you, enough of this! Kith and make up.

Needs only 1 ground, 2 grounds makes a bypass

@rich11292000, correct. I should have removed it which I now have. Was hurrying :-)

No problem @robbi_kiddi, having a second ground to short half the circuit is a typical noob mistake, dont worry. For you to think about, what happen if the zener gets damaged and an open circuit?

Kiani, you choose to demonstrate here again what a pathetic joke you are. Perhaps you should learn to keep quiet. Everyone else, thanks for your useful comments.

it'd work with a step down transformer on the front end with an output of ~30V p-p. cap series mains supplies are never a good idea; the input capacitor works too hard, and when they fail they punch through, putting the surge through the load. this circuit is nice in theory but very dangerous.

@faceblast, thanks for your useful input. Of course if I used a transformer it wouldn’t be transformer-less. Occasionally I publish a circuit that has been published in a reputable electronic book or magazine - this is such a circuit. Whilst @hurz asked a relevant question about the Zener going short circuit and you have raised concerns that should be considered, Kiani has again chosen to exercise his right to show his utmost stupidity.
