AC generator to simulate modulated light input to diode.  Shielded cable from left diode to 1K resistor and from output of 741 op amp to battery powered amplifier.  Gain of pre amp 100000 K/ 1000k = 100

Earphones can help in noisy areas.  Low volume until  focused on light source.  Sudden flash of light will give very loud sound with earphones.
