Hi, I am new to this and have a question: While I understand the part of the lights (i.e. LED + protective resistor going through a transistor which is switched by the input current on the left), I don't quite understand why it needs the diodes like this. I want to achieve something similar (just for learning purposes): I have a single 5V input and want to use a potentiometer to control how many lights are active. I have tried an approach with Zener diodes but I didn't quite manage to make it work yet (i.e. with just the single 5V input, and no OpAmp)

you can use 6 leds for 5V
