The voltage source contains AC and DC components. 
a) At the 1k resistor load, the DC is blocked while AC is coupled through.
b) At the LED branch, the AC is blocked while the DC passes through to light up the LED

Is the 10pF capacitor necessary? If so, why?

The inductor I used in my circuit is wirewound type and has an inherent parasitic capacitance of about 10pf. I included it because it is part of my model in other circuits. The parasitic 10pF cap actually provides a notch at 5MHz, so the DC to the LED branch, is also cleaner.
