What I like about this circuit is the 555  functions as a monostable multivibrator. When the  timing cycle is initiated by an input pulse, subsequent input pulses have no effect on the output until the cycle is completed and once completed the output changes states.  Adjusting R1 will change the output frequency to input frequency.
