This is a voltage regulator. In case if you don't have one you can make with transistors a zener diode and a resistor.

Yep it is inefficient as hell but it's a good solution when you need a really small current

Way too inefficient, 50vdc-5vdc? Lots of heat dissipated in this. Take off one of the transistors too, you don't need the darlington configuration here for it to work.
