Powering an LED with US Mains 120V. Its an experiment I did couple of months ago.

Right, foto? The extra diode is better placed in parallel to the LED in reverse direction, cuz LEDs are only, if they, specified to 5V in Vreverse not for 170V

Thats how I conducted my experiment. Nothing happened to the LED but I understand why it should be the way you say.

Why not. Its forward voltage is less then the specified reverse voltage. Again, 5V reverse if you are lucky or nothing said and you are on your own risk with any reverse voltage/ooeration.
