Why does this work with no voltage source and no ground?

It is internally sourced and sinked. No power or ground needed, only logic voltage to change its state. The reason for this is because of limited space. Opamps and logic gates are the same and are also internally powered and grounded. The 555 model is said to be internally grounded.

I wish you could float the ground on the 555 so it could function easily with a bipolar supply
