But you forgot to mention that the resistor gets fried with about 10 watts - the wattage of a small solder iron - leaving about 80 milliwatts for the LED. That's like buying a liter bottle of vodka, and in the attempt of pouring half a shot glass, spilling the rest of the bottle.
