Using a Transistor as a Diode

They're the same thing basically. A diode is a PN Junction and a transistor has an extra junction to control the current flow. Anyway transistors are not to be used this way. Such a high base current will break the transistor.

Why you can not do it this way is not the base current (which is low) the reason is more the reverse voltage which the BJT dont like a lot. Diodes are made to withstand easy 1000V bjt's are not. But in forward this bjt configuration is quite common e.g. as reference voltage for current sources. Hope this helps.
