It can be easily improved by adding a simple filter between the power source and regulator. Try 1 ohm resistor between source and 10 ohm resistor and a 1000 microfarad capacitor at the junction of the 1 ohm and 10 ohm resistors with the other end ( negative end ) connected to ground.
