switches are spark gaps. in a marx generator the resistors slow the flow of current so that each stage charges slower than the previous stage. as each stage reaches its full charge the voltage rises high enough to jump the gap, dumping all its charge into the caps of the next stage which then triggers the next spark gap to fire and so on. While running the sim, hit the first switch then quickly hit the next switch to see how it works.
