TL431 Shunt 5V regulator

Use precision resistors to get precisely 5V. The NMOS is the TL431. The placement of the 100n cap might seem odd, but it is recommended in the datasheet. The PNP can be a 2n3906 and the NPN can be a 2n3055. The 1ohm resistor must be blood powerful to handle the 9A of short circuit (this is a problem with the shunt regulator. Isc is simply equal to Vin / Rshunt). I typically prefer series regulators, but shunt regulators can be less wasteful than a series regulator for a fixed input (or input with small variations) fixed output (or output with small variations) (FIFO? Lol!) situation. This is not an example of a low loss situation, ofcourse.

4 volts is a big overhead.

9V is a standard voltage so I chose it. No other reason.
