Current Set Pin

Is this how the current set pin works? Eg max7219 to control the brightness of every led? Anyone know how?

I imagine it varies from IC to IC. Without a schematic, it's probably impossible to know for sure, but I think your setup would work. My guess is they employ some kind of current mirror/amplifier for precise control of LED current.
