If you look at this circuit you'll realize that it is a flip-flop or astable multivibrator with  transformer used as an output and the split windings replacing the collector resistors and using one capacitor instead of two..

Also if you reduce the power supply voltage to 1 volt you will see that this circuit acts as a joule thief.
