It works technically, but the usual reason for having a switch at a transistor is to avoid having say 300v and 300 Watts (nearly 1A) at the switch......a low current / volts is normally used to operate a high load. You may as well just use an ordinary house switch instead of this circuit because the high load is at your on switch.

GTO are used in controlled AC rectifier. A simple switch can't switch on and off 50 times in a second. GTO is like SCR , but you can turn it off with a negative pulse.

So.. What if the fundamental difference between an SCR and a GTO? I understand the operational difference, but their equivalent circuits appear virtually identical.
