Trying to understand fundamental properties of transistors. If I'm correct the transistor on the left when operating is in reverse active mode, and the one on the right is in saturation/cutoff mode.

@BillyT: I think it controls base current, not sure. It also acts as a pull-up resistor which is a feature of TTL. Anyway, it's the way real TTL is wired. Search the web for ttl logic gate circuit diagram
