Good theoretical idea, but have a look at the currents when you have the maximum output. Even with EC's 10% minimum potentiometer, a 10KW pot would be required, the base current at 2.5A is a bit large, and the size of the heatsink to handle sinking 60V at 28A across the transistor would be massive.
