bfat748 - That is close, but I don't want it to pulse. I have built a 12 volt light and want it to turn on slow or ramp up, when I turn on the switch, and then turnn off or fade off when I close the switch.

Be aware of this problem which could potentially destroy the transistor: with capacitor fully discharged, the current through transistor spikes, as it is not limited anywhere (except by internal resistances of components and power supply) when you close the switch. Only when capacitor charges is current reduced, but that may be too late for poor transistor.
