In this circuit first we will rectify using the diode and then what we get is a pulsating dc so here we will use the a shunt capacitor to get a constant dc
The shunt capacitor passes the ac through it leaving behind the dc to the resistor
The shunt capacitor gives a path to ac and don't allow the dc current to pass through it.
