This circuit shows a simple way to control a relay using an Arduino board. The Switch represents an Arduino digital pin. 
The 5V source represents the 5v output from the Arduino board. 
The 110/220V power source represents an AC coming from a building's electric network. 
The diode is for protection the transistor from the coil of the relay.
