Transistor as switch

Two LEDs connected to their own voltage sources. Turning on a led will switch off the another one. Learning more about transistors! Trying to use transistors as logical gates. So far I can't implement a clean solution to make the LEDs turn on exclusively. And also, the logical NOT turns out to be a very expensive, a lot of current is flowing in order to keep a LED off.

While this works in the simulation it doesn't work in real circuit for obvious reasons. Could anyone tell me please how to implement this correctly? Really appreciate your help.

i guess you have problems with the lower right circuit. Spend one more base resistor, cuz transistors are not 100% equal, and it will work as you expect. http://everycircuit.com/circuit/5586574090436608
