The SPDT switch is Forward/Reverse. Counter clockwise is left SPDT switch and clockwise is right SPDT switch. The LEDs represents current traveling through coils. Red LEDs is North pole current, and Blue LEDs is south pole current.

Interesting. Don't most stepper motors have more than 4 coils, though?

It varies. The least have 3, and some goes up to 8 coils

I see. How then do stepper motors have smaller step sizes? If 8 coils are used, then the minimum step size would be 45 degrees (360 / 8), right?

they use "gear like" magnetic poles on the rotor that don't always align and give you more degrees of division.
