An astable multivibrator, producing a short pulse, fed to a monostable multivibrator that extends the pulse, the duration of which can be varied by the rheostat (variable resistor), and then to a bistable multivibrator (not that I can think of any practical reasons to produce one from a 555 timer with the additional expense of a transistor).
