Swell! I can't figure out how it works, though. Why do the LEDs turn back off after the triangle wave passes their turn-on point?

@592azy2circuitdude great question! So this circuit basically works on the principle that the only LED that will light up is one where the inverter connected to its anode (+ terminal) is outputting a logic high and the inverter on its cathode (- terminal) is logic low. This only happens when the voltage at the voltage divider at the input of two adjacent inverters is high enough to flip one of the inverters but not the subsequent one, which only ever happens at one point
