I wonder if this could provide a longer lifespan for my LED bulbs, by protecting them from the stress of turning them on and off. The resistor is to discharge the capacitor.

And why does a LED feel stress while startup?

I actually don't really know, but the bulbs we have at home can bear only 15000 on-off cycles, which is not that much. I would like to extend that by a little.

A "softstart" is probably more stress to your bulbs then a quick "normal" start. You have to understand why and what componente is in stress. LED bulbs, for mains voltage, do have much more components then just the LED itself.

I would put this in the bulb, parallel to the LEDs

But which of the LED-bulb components does get stress while switch on/off ??????????????????????????????????

The diodes

Which physical effect does cause this in detail please?

This would make sense with tungsten filament lamps, which have lower resistance when cold, and thus suffer a current surge when switched on. LEDs on the other hand are routinely pulsed too fast to see because they are briefly brighter when just switched on.

Er, now I've read the first comments (koff koff lol), I have to say I think your LED bulbs are designed to fail. (And as hurz implied, it might not be the diodes themselves which fail.) I've got one which is expected to last 5 years "in normal use", so maybe try a different manufacturer.

I don't know too much about LED's (the diodes), and I thought that they are the parts failing, but if it's the driver, that's a smaller problem. I would like to build a PWM controlled LED bulb for my room, and I wanted it to last long.
