Its for the sensitivity of the mic if you connect one as replacement for the switch. ^_^

You can change the value of capacitor connected to the threshold of the ne555 for the "on" duration of an led or you can put relay on it. Just remember to put diode for emf protection.

Maybe I'm missing the obvious but I think nikisalli is pointing out the wiper is not connected. Did you realise?
