Very stable and simple power supply with low dropout on high current changes. The voltage is controlled with the zener.

Problem with linear regulators and high currents is that they are very inefficient. In your example are about 40 Watts input split over 5 Watts for the load (light bulb) while the regulator converts 35 Watts to heat. That's an "efficiency" of about 12%.

Yes for high current and high voltage drop, use switching regulators, but often it's better to design your curcuit to not need one at all, because of all the noise they make.

I notice that regulation of this circuit or component dimensioning is very bad when input voltage changes. For example, when input voltage drops from 40 to 35 Volt, output goes from 5.3 down to 4 Volt.
