USB has a standard voltage of 5 volts. If you plan on taking 6.5 volts and stepping it fown to 5 volts, then I suggest adding some sort of voltage regulation. As your load resistance increases the voltage across the load also increases. This could lead to "bad things" depending on what is plugged in.

If you're interested, i created a ~9v to 5v linear voltage regulator. 1.5 amps max.
