He isn't trying to "dc a transformer". Look closer. The xfmr primary inductance was left at 10H. Tazers need low primary inductance around 50uH in order to be pulsed this way without the freewheel diode. You're dissipating all your power in that diode before it even makes it to the secondary. The ZVS flyback driver makes a nice, stable and efficient Battery operable HV converter.
